The Elusive Black Chipmunk { Furry Friends at Elope Niagara }

My husband is the resident nature nut, bird man and chipmunk watcher. He has this amazing eye for spotting birds and knows the type of each and every one. He spots frogs, bugs and other critters anywhere they are hiding and can instantly identify the croaks, squeaks and other crazy animal kingdom sounds coming from any direction .

“THERE IT GOES! IT’S THE BLACK CHIPMUNK!”

Apparently a black chipmunk has been born, transported, or hitchhiked – who knows how he got here, but he has set up camp in our yard, to the absolute amazement of my husband. My husband freaks out every time the little guy is spotted which probably freaks out the poor little guy even more!

Just ask Kathy and her husband- anytime they are over, Dwayne can always be heard:

“THERE IT IS! IT’S THE BLACK CHIPMUNK! DID YOU GUYS SEE IT?”

I was commissioned to try and photograph the little guy which has proved to be a very tricky task as he is one fast little sucker. Sometimes, I’ll be trying to relax after a day of chapel weddings with a glass of wine, and I hear the alert of the chipmunk spotting. That is my cue to jump out of my chair and make an insane dash to find my camera. By the time I am ready, the chipmunk has disappeared of course.

I have learned to keep my camera nearby whenever my husband is outside. Every day conversations are interrupted with “THERE’S THE BLACK CHIPMUNK! DID YOU SEE HIM?”

The little guy has blended in very well with the other chipmunks in the garden as none of them apparently seem to mind that he is very rare. I finally captured him on camera, and thought to myself, huh, he actually does exist! Now, what to name him? Midnight? Speedy Gonzales? Lightning? Sometimes I’ll see him first before my husband does (very rare), but when it does happen I don’t point him out because I know doing that will lead to:

“IT’S THE BLACK CHIPMUNK!”…oh really

“DID YOU SEE HIM”…yes I pointed him out

“WHERE’S YOUR CAMERA?”…heavy sigh…I don’t know

“DO YOU KNOW HOW RARE IT IS TO SEE A BLACK CHIPMUNK?”…that’s wonderful honey

Just one of the many fun facts at the little log chapel, our unique little furry friends!

XOXO

Kim
